UC Davis Chancellor May Condemns Antisemitic Graffiti Found in Residence Hall

Chancellor Gary S. May released the following statement today (Oct. 13):

To the UC Davis Community:

Today, swastika drawings were found in Alder Hall, a residence hall for first-year students. The incident was reported to the Harassment and Discrimination Assistance and Prevention Program (HDAPP) and the UC Davis Police Department, and the graffiti was immediately removed.

Our Jewish community is still reeling from two antisemitic incidents that occurred in August. I condemn those cowards who once more have tried to intimidate our students. We are seeing a rise in antisemitism not only on our campus but at many other universities in California, and the Anti-Defamation League has reported an alarming rise in antisemitism overall.

We know messages of condemnation are not enough. We will continue to meet with Jewish students, faculty and staff to not only show our support but talk through any solutions. We invite the campus community to learn more on our Addressing Antisemitism webpage, which includes resources that can inform the campus.

Last month leaders from the city of Davis and Yolo County issued their own statement condemning hate, where they outlined how they plan to engage with the broader community in the near future to “develop actions, condemn hate, create safety and cultivate kindness.” We will partner with them on their efforts.

Just a few weeks ago, several campus leaders joined me in meeting with students who represent the Jewish community on campus to discuss how we can continue to show our support when many live in fear. We have ongoing collaborative discussions with the Hillel at Davis and Sacramento executive director and staff. And our UC Davis Advisory Council on Jewish Life is working with me and others to identify more actions we can take to address antisemitism and provide support.

If you have information about today’s or any other incidents, please contact the campus Police Department, phone 530-752-1727.

If you need support, please reach out to the following:

The perpetrators of these crimes do not in any way embody the values of UC Davis. We will always stand strong against hate.

Signed,

Gary S. May
Chancellor
