Thousands of students have put it through its paces since it opened this spring, and now the campus community is invited to celebrate the Teaching and Learning Complex at a dedication ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The event, scheduled for 3 p.m. on the building’s south stairs, will feature remarks by Chancellor Gary S. May, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mary Croughan, as well as Jim Carroll, campus architect and vice chancellor of Design and Construction Management; Kem Saichaie, director of learning, teaching and assessment at the Center for Educational Effectiveness; and Matt Traxler associate vice provost for academic planning.

Refreshments will be served, and some of the people who helped make the building a reality will give tours.

The Teaching and Learning Complex, or TLC, is UC Davis’ first new general classroom building in 50 years. It features a 426-seat auditorium, two classrooms with 173 seats each, 20 other classrooms with 37 to 124 seats each, a teaching and learning lab and lots of study space.

Stadium-style stairways are designed as gathering spots: one is outside, under a shade structure on the building’s south side, while the other is inside on the building’s north side. The exterior stairway is outfitted with tables; the interior stairway boasts numerous cushions and electrical outlets.

The university broke ground on the $86 million building in 2019 on the former site of Surge IV and the next year invited the campus community to sign a beam that was subsequently hoisted into place over the south stairs. The TLC opened at the start of spring quarter 2022.
