Interim Suspension Takes Effect as Review Continues

Updated 12:55 p.m. May 29:

New statement from Emily Galindo, interim vice chancellor of Student Affairs:

The Division of Student Affairs has placed the Cal Aggie Marching Band (CAMB) on interim suspension pending the completion of the independent review of recent allegations of misconduct. The Cal Aggie Marching Band Alumni Association has been on suspension from performing alongside the CAMB since winter quarter when allegations of misconduct of one of its members first surfaced. Interim suspensions have been implemented for other student groups previously under review for misconduct within the division. Our leadership is committed to conducting a thorough internal and external assessment to determine the best path forward to provide a safe and inclusive experience for all student band members.

Statement from Emily Galindo, interim vice chancellor of Student Affairs:

The safety of students is of paramount importance to UC Davis. The university has received allegations of misconduct by members of the Cal Aggie Marching Band and the Cal Aggie Alumni Band. When we learned of the allegations, our leadership responded with the following actions: Activities with the Cal Aggie Alumni Band were placed on hold until further notice. The university has launched an independent, comprehensive review by an external law firm to evaluate whether band members have been subject to conduct that violates university policy or any applicable laws. The review will also consider whether band administrators failed to appropriately respond to reports of misconduct and will include an assessment of the relationship with the alumni band. Within the Division of Student Affairs, Campus Recreation leadership has also initiated a review of policies, procedures, reporting and training, and is consulting with other UC campuses to ensure best practices.

We are committed to taking any and all necessary actions to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for all band members. These actions will include creating a new oversight structure.

We want to be sure that students know they have campus resources to support them. We have a list of confidential and non-confidential resources for victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Any student who has experienced sexual harassment or sexual assault can report it by contacting the Harassment and Discrimination Assistance and Prevention Program at 530-747-3864. Hazing can be reported to the Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs at 530-752-1128 or ossja@ucdavis.edu.
