A bald eagle that was brought to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s California Raptor Center in February after she was hit by a truck in Shasta County has been released into the wild. The eagle received treatment that included a cast on her broken wing, physical therapy and then flight training before being released near the spot where she was found. — Video by Joe Proudman/UC Davis
Woodland police dog goes home to heal
Officers from the Woodland, UC Davis and Twin Cities police departments gathered Monday (June 6) as Peydro, a Woodland police dog, was released from the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Peydro had undergone surgery and received care for spinal and facial injuries suffered when he was accidentally hit by a car on May 28 while pursuing a suspect. Veterinary neurosurgeons placed two pins in Peydro’s vertebrae to stabilize the spinal injury and repaired his facial wounds. He goes home now to finish recuperating with his handler, officer Juan Barerra. The Foothills K9 Association provided a ramp and an orthopedic bed for Peydro. — Pat Bailey

New Campus Store opens its doors
After months of construction and a temporary home for textbook sales, UC Davis again has a permanent bookstore. The newly named Campus Store opened in the Memorial Union on Monday (June 6), featuring a new look, seismic renovations, fitting rooms and a place to pick up or return orders from Amazon. Despite the finals week opening, business was brisk at the store on its first day; a grand opening celebration will be held in the fall. — Cody Kitaura
