Our campus is home to a number of biological collections, from fossils and insects to pressed plants and yeasts. UC Davis recently celebrated Biodiversity Museum Day, which invites the public to visit and explore some of our collections. Joining us on this episode of UC Davis LIVE are the curators of three of our museums to talk about their collections and how they support research, teaching and outreach on campus.
- Lynn Kimsey is a professor of entomology and director of the R. M. Bohart Museum of Entomology. Founded in 1946, the museum houses the seventh largest insect collection in North America, with about 7 million specimens of arthropods.
- Ernesto Sandoval is manager of the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory. The conservatory’s collection of live plants supports research and teaching on campus, as well as for other academic institutions including K-12 schools.
- Kyria Boundy-Mills is curator of the Phaff Yeast Culture Collection in the Department of Food Science and Technology. It is one of the largest public collections of wild yeasts in the world, including original yeast strains used in California wine fermentation.
