Chancellor Gary S. May and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mary Croughan issued the following message today (Oct. 20) to faculty and staff:

Dear Colleagues,

We are aware that UCOP’s messaging around curtailment has caused anxiety within the campus community. Given that, we write to clarify a few points and reiterate a core principle.

First, it is our understanding that the UC Office of the President reached out systemwide in good faith, seeking feedback about curtailment as one possible method of grappling with budgetary difficulties that have arisen out of the COVID-19 crisis. Second, we are still in the early stages of surveying what has become a more perilous budgetary landscape on our campus. There is a great deal of discussion still ahead of us before we make any final choices, and we plan to use transparent and collaborative processes as we do this work. Third, as we confront growing shortfalls, we remain committed to the fundamental idea that layoffs should be a last resort.

And so, although we are open to considering many approaches, we will do everything in our power to keep members of our community employed during these challenging times.
