The latest round of rain to hit over the weekend claimed two more large victims among the campus's trees.
An oak tree fell on Haring Hall early this morning (Jan. 23), and crews brought in a crane and other heavy machinery to clear it away. Some power in the area was shut off as a precaution.
Another tree, a stone pine, fell just north of Shields Library Sunday afternoon, narrowly missing the building but landing on a planter box that held a smaller tree.
Both trees were healthy but couldn't withstand the saturated soils after the heavy rain.
"The soil’s just so wet — there’s not much we can do when the wind blows like this," said Cary Avery, who leads Grounds and Landscape Services.
No major building leaks were reported over the weekend.
Crews should get a reprieve while they clean up this week, with only light rain forecast by the National Weather Service.
