March 7, Friday -- From wearing black arm bands in protest of the Vietnam War to displaying a "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner, generations of American students have tested the scope of First Amendment free-speech protections. With the Supreme Court's recent decision on students' speech rights in Morse v. Frederick, the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" case, these issues are even more timely — and fascinating. They will be the focus of a daylong symposium, "First Amendment Rights in America’s Public Schools: From the Schoolhouse Gate to the Courthouse Steps," sponsored by the UC Davis Law Review. Speakers will include Kenneth Starr, dean of the Pepperdine University School of Law. The symposium will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Wilkins Moot Courtroom in King Hall on the UC Davis campus. It is free and open to the public.
