FACULTY 'CLASS OF 2004' ...

Welcoming new faculty to campus during a special dinner last week at the Chancellor's Residence, Larry Vanderhoef talks with Mike Stieff, a new professor in education, and then separately with agricultural and environmental sciences faculty member Konstantinos Papamichael, right, and his wife, Kathleen Close. Addressing the new senate faculty, Chancellor Vanderhoef noted: "We're delighted that you've joined our family, and we will do all we can to help you be successful in your careers here." The "Class of 2004" numbers some 102 new senate faculty members, said Vice Provost for Academic Personnel Barbara Horwitz. Sixty-four percent are male, 36 percent female and 29 percent people of color, she said. "We've very proud of our hires," Horwitz said. "It will be you who determine what the university will be as it matures and becomes higher and higher in the rankings." Academic Senate Chair Dan Simmons urged the new faculty to become involved in shared governance. "This is and will be your institution," he said. "You have a strong voice and opportunity to set the direction for its future. I invite you to take your responsibility, to join us in the management of this institution through the Academic Senate."
