| What: | Students from the UC Davis College of Engineering host a series of events marking Engineering Week, Feb. 19-22. Friday Feb. 22 is K-12 school day. Local school students will tour laboratories, build towers and paper airplanes, and experiment with slime. They will also compete in the annual egg drop contest, to design, build and test a device that can protect an egg dropped from a six-story building. |

| Visuals: | Previous year's events have involved more than 100 students from schools in the Davis-Woodland-Sacramento area. In the egg drop contest, students wrap raw eggs in protective containers they have made, and see if the eggs survive the drop from the roof of the six-story Physics/Geology building. Previous attempts have included parachutes, padded footballs, rubber chickens and rag dolls. |
| Background: | This is the 51st National Engineers Week, held annually to showcase the work of engineers through fun and educational events. At UC Davis, the Engineering Joint Council, representing all the student engineering clubs on campus, organizes the events. This year, the egg drop contest is being sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. |
