THE DOWNLOAD: ‘In Pursuit of Justice for All’

Updated noon Jan. 18: Mascot Day at UC Davis basketball will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. The date we reported in the original version of Download was incorrect. We have revised the story below, including the ticket link.

The School of Law posted a letter and video Monday (Jan. 16), commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day and inviting people to the school’s fourth annual MLK Day of Service and Celebration. Watch the video above.

At a law school that stands in tribute to the civil rights gains made by Dr. King, we must examine the systemic racism that tragically persists in our legal system and world at large,” Dean Kevin R. Johnson wrote. “UC Davis Law’s Racial Justice Speaker Series, now in its third academic year, explores potential paths forward. The series resumes Feb. 1 with a virtual talk by UCLA Professor of History, African American Studies and Urban Planning Kelly Lytle Hernández based on her book Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and a Revolution in the Borderlands.

“On Martin Luther King Jr. Day and throughout the year, we strive to follow Dr. King’s extraordinarily courageous and brilliant example, our entire King Hall community joined in pursuit of justice for all.”

Renetta Garrison Tull, vice chancellor of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, sent out a tweet about the day's keynote address by a federal judge:

The law school’s MLK Day event included a collection for the Malcolm X Academy in Sacramento — and this drive will continue through Thursday (Jan. 19) in Alexis Elston’s office, 2129 King Hall. In addition, the academy’s Amazon wish list will remain active through Friday (Jan. 20). For more information, contact Elston by email.

Updated noon Jan. 18: To reflect new date and time for Mascot Day, and new ticket link.

Speaking of Athletics, come celebrate Mascot Day at the men’s basketball game Saturday (Jan. 21) when Gunrock (the real one, not the digital version you see here) will host other local mascots. It’s the second of two Youth Days this week at Aggie basketball. Saturday's game — Ags vs. the Cal Poly Mustangs — starts at 3 p.m. at the University Credit Union Center. Buy tickets here.

Athletics introduced the digital Gunrock in November, the first in a series adding another way to show off our mascot.
