Feb. 28, Wednesday -- Lynne Stewart, an attorney convicted for helping her terrorist client communicate with his followers, and Jeff Mackler, working to free Mumia Abu-Jamal from prison, will speak at the UC Davis School of Law. Mackler, director of the Northern California-based Mobilization to Free Abu-Jamal, said they will discuss government assaults on fundamental civil liberties. Stewart, sentenced to 28 months in prison, is free on bail pending an appeal of her 2005 conviction for passing messages between an Egyptian terrorist group and Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, who is serving a life sentence for a plot to bomb the United Nations, FBI offices and other New York landmarks. Abu-Jamal, formerly a radio reporter in Philadelphia, was convicted of the 1981 murder of a police officer. The presentation, organized by the National Lawyers Guild at King Hall, will begin at noon in the Wilkins Moot Court Room in King Hall.
