CoHo pizza, deli and espresso shops set to close

With the Coffee House remodeling in its final stages, the CoHo is preparing to shut down the temporary food and coffee stations in the Memorial Union’s east corridor.

In fact, July 30 is the last day for the pizza, deli and espresso shops, the Coffee House announced. They have been open for almost a year during the $8 million CoHo project, which comprises renovations and expansion.

Darin Schluep, food service manager, said a “soft opening” of the new and improved Coffee House is scheduled for Sept. 20, first day of the fall quarter, and a full opening is set for Sept. 23, the first day of instruction.

“The opening dates are contingent upon the construction proceeding as planned, and no delays popping up at the last minute (fingers crossed!!!),” Schluep said by e-mail.

The pizza, deli and espresso shops are closing now, he said, so the equipment can be moved back to the real Coffee House, and to allow time for training of approximately 200 student employees — so they are ready to hit the ground running for fall quarter.

As the CoHo moves out of its temporary quarters, construction crews will get the MU rooms back in order for the post office, Classical Notes and Campus Copies. They moved to temporary quarters of their own a year ago, to make way for CoHo food and espresso.

Schluep said the last day for the CoHo’s temporary convenience store, CoHo-to-Go, is scheduled for Aug. 20, plus or minus a week; and the last day for the temporary bakery is tentatively set for Sept. 17.

The bakery will be moving into entirely new quarters, in a section of the Coffee House that used to be outside — in a notched area between two sections of dining hall on the south side of the MU. The notch is now enclosed, and crews are finishing up the bakery and coffee bar in the center of the room.
