A British Solution for California Public Schools?

Dec. 11, Tuesday -- The British "inspectorate" model of school oversight will be the subject of a daylong conference hosted by the UC Davis School of Education and its Center for Applied Policy in Education. The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mondavi Center.

Representatives from the United Kingdom and from school systems in New York and North Carolina that are experimenting with the approach will discuss their experiences. Speakers will include:

  • John MacBeath, chair of educational leadership, University of Cambridge, director of leadership for learning, the Cambridge Network
  • Bill Clark, senior principal consultant, Cambridge Education, U.K.

  • Scott Hill, Undersecretary for Education for California
  • Alan Bersin, former Secretary of Education for California
  • Jim Wilson, chief of staff, California Senate Education Committee
  • Paul Warren, principal fiscal and policy analyst, California Legislative Analyst’s office
  • Rick Simpson, deputy chief of staff, California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles
  • Caprice Young, president and CEO, California Charter School Assn.
  • David Gordon, superintendent, Sacramento County Office of Education
