roses
This photo of roses on display at Buehler Alumni Center, by Michelle Higuera, a student in animal science, tried to show environmental manipulation by exposing the roses to food coloring.

The Weekender is a regular feature of the UC Davis Arts Blog appearing each Thursday — when weekends really need to begin. The column features stuff to do on and around the UC Davis campus this weekend. Know of art and related events in the region? Let us know at kmnikos@ucdavis.edu

If you are not involved in any commencements, or even if you are, here are a few things to do. All are free.

Photography at alumni center bridges art and science

The final student exhibition for “Photography: Bridging Art and Science,” a UC Davis class taught by Professor Terry Nathan, in the Atmospheric Science Program, is at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center on the campus through Aug. 14. The exhibit features 50 student photographs exploring the conceptual connections between art and science and the role of art and science on campus.

While strolling the Buehler Alumni Center recently, I also stumbled across another exhibit of photography to the left of the lobby. Sponsored by the Mellon Research Initiative Reimagining Indian Ocean Worlds, the Exhibition is "Reimagining Iranian African Slavery: Photography as Material Culture." Give this gallery of historic photos a look too.

And, at the Manetti Shrem...

UC Davis’ AHI 401 curatorial studies class has a two-part exhibit exploring the meaning of sanctuary in the Collections Classroom at the Manetti Shrem Museum through June 17. Lots of other art to see too, including the Graduate Exhibition, which closes Sunday too.
