My name is Orli Algranatti, and I'm a current undergraduate student at UC Davis studying Animal Science. If you're a high school student interested in becoming a veterinarian, I'd love to share some advice with you about my experiences at UC Davis and how you can make the most of your time here!

First off, let me tell you that pursuing a career in veterinary medicine can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. UC Davis is an amazing place to kickstart your journey, and I feel so lucky to be a part of this community. When I first started as an animal science student here, I was a little nervous, as I had just moved all the way across the country, but I quickly learned that there are many opportunities to get involved and make a difference.

I chose UC Davis because it’s renowned for its cutting-edge veterinary program. Our animal science major helps undergraduate students get hands-on experience in the field, and prepares them to pursue veterinary school! I was also fortunate enough to get involved in research at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine my very first quarter on campus. It's been an eye-opening experience that has allowed me to develop important skills, expand my network, build amazing friendships, and learn from some of the brightest minds in the field.

Getting Involved in College and Joining a Pre-Vet Club

One of the best things I've done at UC Davis is joining and becoming President of the Vet Aide Club. It's the largest pre-vet club on campus, and it's been a game-changer for me. Through the club, I've met fellow students who share the same passion for animals, organized events with inspiring speakers, and supported my community. The Vet Aide Club works closely with the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to  provide opportunities for students to work alongside a veterinary student mentor, attend veterinary school classes, a nd obtain internships. It's been an incredible way to learn, grow, and make lifelong friends.

But it's not just about academics and research at UC Davis. There are so many other ways to get involved and make the most out of your time here. I've enjoyed being a part of the Greek community on campus and joining the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi sorority, as well as Chabad. It's been an incredible way to meet people from different backgrounds, build up my community, and have some fun along the way.

Finding support along the way!

The faculty and staff genuinely care about your success and are always there to help. Don't be afraid to reach out to professors, advisors, or other campus resources for guidance or support. The Internship and Career Center has plenty of resources for pre-vet students looking to build their resumes, and students looking to get a head start on research can find different opportunities and programs at the Undergraduate Research Center. And if you're struggling with a tough class, there are tutoring centers on campus that can be a real lifesaver.

My Top Tip for Animal Science Students

I want to encourage you to stay true to your passion for veterinary medicine. It's not always easy, but keeping your "why" in mind can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. Stay in touch with why you are pursuing your interest, why this is your passion, and why you want to study veterinary medicine. Knowing that will be your superpower. And remember, it's okay to take risks, try new things, and embrace unexpected opportunities along the way. Some of the best experiences come from stepping out of your comfort zone.

So, if you're considering a future in veterinary medicine, know that you'll be joining an incredible community of like-minded individuals at UC Davis who are passionate about animals and making a difference in the world. Embrace the opportunities, seek support when needed, and enjoy the journey. I wish you the best of luck on your path to becoming a veterinarian!
